The Services we offer

Our experience spans most aspects of flare and relief, and we can seamlessly manage or work an organisations Project team or tailor our services to suit a particular requirement .

Flare and Relief Audits

MF Process Safety has extensive experience of assessing facilities in the Upstream and Downstream sectors, both onshore and offshore, and can quickly identify areas of concern or weakness, and focus in on priority issues.

Hydraulic Modelling

A hydraulic model which accurately represents the flare system, together with a well documented contingency table is essential, both for understanding current operational risks and for management of future changes. The model forms the hub of a more comprehensive analysis. and is used as a tool to assess other elements of the design.

Radiation Modelling

Radiation analysis is an integral part of the assessments our Consultants carry out, both for new designs and for existing facilities to debottleneck or to understand plot constraints. We can also advise on how best to manage or mitigating excessive heat loads

Equipment Design & Specification

Our experience covers

  • Relief device sizing - relief valves, bursting discs, rupture pins
  • Knockout Drums
  • Flare systems - elevated,ground, burn pits
  • Knockout drums
  • Liquid Seal
  • Ignition Systems
  • Purging stations
  • Flare Gas Recovery

Dispersion Modelling

Our team have experience of modelling and understanding the consequences of unlit releases from flares, cold vents, storage tanks and relief valve tailpipes

Training

Training courses and workshops  can be developed to suit your specific requirements, focusing on specific areas of concern, structured to suit the experience of the audience.

Mechanical Installation and Supports

Pressure relief assessments should be a multi-disciplinary approach. We have Mechanical engineers who can support a Process study to assess the impact of reaction forces, low temperature excursions below MDMT and slug flow.

Dynamic Simulation

When a conventional static analysis identifies problems, we can employ dynamic simulation to give a more realistic idea of the system  capacity by including for the inherently dynamic nature of the process .

Design Guidelines

Design guidelines have been developed for operators and engineering contractors covering many aspects of flare, relief & blowdown design, including:

  • Hydraulic Modelling
  • Radiation Modelling
  • Knockout Drum Sizing
  • Dispersion Analysis
  • Blowdown and Fire Survivability
  • Relief system sizing
  • Installation and Inspection requirements
  • Low temperature analysis
  • Scenario Analysis

Flare and Relief Design Basis & Philosophies

Prior to the development of a plant process design, we can assist with

  • Relief, blowdown and flare philosophies
  • Layout and plot plans, sense checking with radiation and dispersion calculations
  • Identifying the likely origin of significant flare loads and how they should be segregated.
  • Initial quantification of major loads
  • Undertaking up-front preliminary sizing of main flare equiment and header sizes
  • Selection of appropriate technologies .

Project Design Audits

Whether auditing against an Operators design standards or against best practise, we have extensive experience of carrying our Project Design Audits, identifying undue conservatism or issues at an early stage to ensure Projects remain on track and avoid costly rework.

Reducing Flare Emissions

Our analysis would typically cover

  • A justification of the economical and environmental benefits vs cost expenditure.
  • A review of all sources - continuous and emergency
  • Analysis of how the flare is operated.
  • Relief device maintenance protocols
  • Consideration of technologies available for flare gas or vapour recovery.
  • Process unit mitigation.

Blowdown System Assessments

Our analysis would typically cover

  • Depressuring system blowdown profile checks
  • A review of all sources - continuous and emergency
  • Assessment vs fire risk
  • Optimisation/debottlenecking

Project Management

Our Consultants have managed large study teams on behalf of operators, providing steer on risk, consequence and assisting with mitigation development

AIV/FIV Assessments

Our Consultants have assessed piping systems in accordance with EI Guidelines. We provide a combined process & mechanical assessment to offer mitigated solutions where necessary
